Term-time Superloo Refurbishments for Ashcombe School
At Interfix, we craft school washroom experiences designed specifically for those that use them every day.
Ashcombe School in Dorking, Surrey is an ambitious, caring and supportive school dedicated to preparing its students for life in the 21st Century. Its vision and ethos promises to provide an inclusive community that allows all members to feel safe and supported.
This ethos extends to all corners of the school environment – including the students’ washroom experience.
Ashcombe School approached Interfix to support them in the complete refurbishment of their suite of superloos. The project was to be completed in term-time, and as such, Ashcombe School required a trusted partner that had extensive experience in completing projects within a school environment with minimal disruptions and robust safety and safeguarding procedures.
The existing student washroom infrastructure comprised 5 female and 5 males superloos. These provisions were outdated and original design flaws had led to increased vandalism opportunities and costly enhanced cleaning requirements.
Washroom Refurbishment Delivery
Working in partnership with the Ashcombe School team, Interfix proposed a new superloo design that resolved existing frustrations, enhanced performance and reinforced the school’s ethos of feeling safe and supported.
The washroom refurbishment included stripping out the existing sanitaryware and flooring. The Interfix team re-tiled the walls and installed new flooring, a WC duct panel at the back of each superloo unit, a new wall-mounted basin with sensor tap and recessed soap dispenser and back to wall WC pan with push button flush.
Design choices minimised vandalism opportunities and reduced the cleaning requirements.
Due to the term-time delivery requirements of this project, the area was sectioned off using temporary fencing and all Interfix operatives were DBS enhanced checked. The team carried out the refurbishment in two 3-week phases with 5 superloos in each phase – this ensured that the pupils had access to toilets throughout the duration of the project.
The Washroom Experience
The final Ashcombe School washroom experience combined careful design with practical execution. Darker tiling and grout removed opportunities for students to write on and deface the toilets, while layout of basins and waste removal were considered and installed to reduce any opportunities for vandalism.
The result? Washroom spaces that are centred around the students that use them. These practical spaces reinforce Aschombe School’s values and ethos, whilst their careful design delivers performance.
