Hygienic washroom design and refurbishment for Southfield Primary School in London
Southfield Primary School approached Interfix to transform their ageing pupil washrooms, which had become increasingly difficult to maintain and no longer met the school’s hygiene or durability standards. After missing out on a summer slot in 2024 due to high demand, the school secured a well-planned project window for the 2025 summer holidays—ensuring the works could be completed safely and without disruption to pupils.
The challenge
The existing washrooms presented several common issues found in older school washroom facilities:
- Outdated and failing fixtures: cubicles were worn and beginning to fall apart, creating both hygiene concerns and ongoing maintenance costs.
- Leaking urinals: persistent leaks caused dampness and unpleasant odours.
- Incompatible materials: previous toilet boxing used moisture-absorbent materials that had swollen and deteriorated over time.
- Difficult-to-clean finishes: the existing handwashing area included grout lines and surfaces that harboured bacteria, making daily cleaning more challenging for site staff.
These issues highlighted the need for a durable, long-lasting refurbishment tailored to the demands of a busy school environment.
Our washroom solution
Interfix delivered a full strip-out and complete washroom modernisation, designed to provide cleanliness, durability and ease of maintenance for years to come.
Key elements of the refurbishment included:
Hygienic wall cladding
We recommended installing hygienic, wipe-clean wall cladding throughout. Unlike traditional tiled surfaces, this system provides:
- A smooth, seamless finish
- No grout lines
- Faster daily cleaning
- Greater long-term durability
This was an ideal solution for a primary school setting where hygiene is paramount.
Solid Grade Laminate (SGL) cubicles and WC duct panels
The new cubicles and duct panels were manufactured from SGL, a fully waterproof material that will not swell, warp or degrade—even with unavoidable splashes in a primary school washroom.
The duct panels also conceal the cisterns, improving hygiene and preventing pupils from tampering with plumbing components.
Solid surface wash troughs with push taps
To replace the outdated handwashing setup, Interfix installed modern solid surface wash troughs, chosen for their:
- High durability
- Minimal joints
- Reduced risk of bacteria build-up
- Easy cleaning and long-term performance
The push-operated taps provide water control, helping to reduce waste and improve safety.
New vinyl flooring
A fresh, slip-resistant vinyl floor was fitted to ensure safety, cleanliness and a contemporary appearance throughout the washroom.
Coordination with Council-funded lighting upgrade
Southfield Primary School was simultaneously undertaking a council-funded lighting improvement project. Interfix worked seamlessly with the council’s appointed contractor to integrate the lighting installation into the washroom refurbishment timeline—ensuring a consistent and high-quality finish.
The result?
The project was completed on schedule during the 2025 summer holidays, providing the school with bright, modern, and hygienic washrooms ready for the new academic year.
The transformation delivered:
- A durable, low-maintenance washroom environment
- Significantly improved hygiene standards
- Robust, waterproof cubicles and duct systems
- A modern and attractive washroom experience for pupils
- Reduced ongoing maintenance costs for the school’s site team
Southfield Primary School now has a washroom facility that meets today’s expectations for quality, safety and hygiene—and will continue to perform for many years to come.
