With its existing toilets having become a haven for vandals, anti-social behaviour and acts of bullying, a new washroom which offered an open environment and more robust fixtures and fittings was in urgent need at Kemnal Technology College in Orpington, Kent.

To design and install this safer, smarter, facility, the washroom refurbishment expertise of Interfix was called upon. The six-week renovation programme began once the layout of the sanitary area was agreed between the college and Interfix. It included the application of a vinyl safety floor.

This will not only help prevent accidents caused by slippages on wet surfaces, its easy-to-clean properties will ensure hygiene standards are better-maintained. Floor-to-ceiling, solid-grade laminate cubicles, which offer greater resistance to would-be acts of vandalism, as well as more privacy for the user, were also installed.

WCs with anti-vandal pans, duct panels and sensor flushing were another new feature, bringing a water-saving, environmentally-friendly element to the refurbishment. Resin-based, wall-mounted wash stations were also included; the equipment’s durable, wipe-clean aspect ensuring it withstands heavy-duty use and resultant wear-and-tear to remain pristine and operational far longer than less-durable material.

Working to a tight, six-week deadline, Interfix’s installation team was able to complete the full-refurbishment outside of school term-time. Upon the students’ return, they had full use of a superbly-appointed new washroom with an ‘open aspect’ to aid staff supervision and eliminate instances of bullying and anti-social behaviour.

It’s resulted in users being more respectful towards their surroundings and cleaner, tidier toilets.
